From the Archives is a series where I share photos of a particular location that I took in years past (as in, before I started this blog in July 2013). In today's post, I will share photos I took in Central New York. Click here to read previous installments.

Old and abandoned buildings have long been a favorite photo subject of mine. I'm not alone either, as many of the old or abandoned buildings I've photographed in my travels I discovered because many others photographed them before me. In this post I've included a few of my favorite photos of such buildings. The buildings in this post are all old, and all of them are showing some signs of wear, but not all of them are completely abandoned. A few of them are open to the public, and are maintained to the extent that they are safe for visitors, but they remain weathered enough that a visitor can still feel a clear link with the building's past.
For those buildings that are abandoned or privately owned, keep in mind that it is never advisable to go into these buildings or on the land to take photos. It is usually illegal and also potentially really dangerous given their condition. I have taken photos of such buildings from the road or from a public spot.

It's that time of year again; time to go through the previous year's photos and pick out favorites. I always wait until the new year to announce my best photos, because what if I take a great photo on December 31? This year I visited a number of filming locations during my trip to Southern California. In the Pacific Northwest, I got to see a lot of "rural decay" as well as some beautiful coastline. Rounded out with trips to Cape Cod and photo adventures around my hometown of Saratoga, I'd say it was another great year for photos. Narrowing it down to just 25 favorites was as difficult a task as always, but after much deliberation, here are my personal favorites:
